The Ustinov -Ricky Gervais connection, did anyone notice?

Just saw this delightful film today and was struck how much Ricky Gervais (The Office) seems to have "taken" from Peter Ustinov: the insecurity, the bluffing, the hesitating, the gestures. Of course Ustinov is totally lovable in this role whereas Gervais is a completely obnoxious person in the Office. Perhaps in real life too.
Did anyone see the connection?

reply

yes, yes yes
of course yes yes
I saw the ending of this film on TCM in the evening.
I got online to check what was being said about it.
And i chanced upon the ricky G. connection.
Later, midnight, INT.
I caught the repeat of the movie. And as i had seen the Ricky G. comment, all i could thing of was, how much of Peter Ustinov's acting mimics Ricky's mannerism. Countenance even.
Anachronisms not withstanding.
So yes yes, yes yes, Ricky has been exposed for the dog he is. He saw this movie at a weak moment in his life. and he got his holy grail.
Be warned all ye fans, if you watch this film, you may never see RG. in the same light again.

And then i realised that this poor soul had put up this post, which is so pertinent. It would have nagged me to death too.

So i got back online and answered. yes yes. you are absolutely right. and you ruined The office for me for ever.
Fascinating, how inspirations work. wot.

You mean Gervais mimics Ustinov. But I still love Gervais (and Ustinov too).

Just watched this film and thought the same thing. Actually came on the board to post a message about it and found this one already existing!

Really? I didn't notice any kind of similarities between the two to be honest.
