logical explination for ending!

notice in the end they have a fire buring and as lee marvin walks over to the japanese guy he knocks over a barrel. what if that barrel had oil in it. oil + fire = KABOOM

reply

It was an artillery shell. You hear the shots going off in the background in the last scene.

They were hit because A) They were on a hill and B) a single candle is visible for 20 miles - everyone on the island could see the fire, and both sides knew that they didn't have anyone up there.

reply

They were bombed.

I am not a complete idiot. Some parts are missing.

reply

Well the reason they died was because the base they were on was once Japanese and then stolen by the Americans and so that no one could gain the island after the Americans they bombed it and since the two were drunk they didn't hear the shots

reply

You watch too many movies.

Oil + Fire = Bigger Fire. Not Kaboom!

Kaboom requires pressure.

reply

The logical explanation is that the studio didn't like the original ending in which Marvin and Mifune silently part ways and tacked on this ridiculous explosive ending, to the distress of Boorman. Why bother trying to dignify the idiocy suits who spoiled a perfectly good film?

reply

I read somewhere that there was a third ending, but it was never filmed. After the two men part ways, Mifune later finds Marvin being tortured and killed by a few Japanese soldiers. Mifune then kills the soldiers before Marvin passes on.

reply

I just watched this last night. It was great until, "You sunuvabitch!" ... BOOM!
I actually laughed out loud.

reply

SERIOUSLY!! Really screwed up ending for such a great film. ... Oh,and it's not Boom, it's KABOOM -> there was pressure!

reply

Pressure as in the kind of pressure an enema makes!

Nothing exists more beautifully than nothing.

reply

fantastic ending,

... the result was that noone got the upper hand or 'won' their own private war

i thought it was a UXB,
but as stated prob was artillery due to their candle
