Singer's income?

He always seemed to have money and yet after he moved, never had a job? Loved this film, Alan Arkin has always been a favourite of mine.

According to the book, Mr. Singer worked at a jewelry store as a silverware engraver. I don't remember if this was mentioned in the film.

It was mentioned in the film. After getting Spiro out of trouble at the beginning he goes to work at a jewelry store engraving a silver platter. And then the lawyer at the beginning says he can call somebody in Jefferson who owns a jewelry store. I missed that part when it was on last night but caught it On Demand

Singer seemed to have a decent job before moving, and lived a simple life, so he probably had enough money saved up for his stay in Jefferson. After he paid the $20 rent upfront, he wouldn't need much to live on. Plus the owner of the diner said he'd give him a discount for being a regular customer.

Not getting a job might also be interpreted as an indication that he had begun to give up on life.
