Peter's ice cream cone

Believe it or not, probably the ONLY thing I didn't get in this movie was the close-up shot of Peter holding a melting ice cream cone in his hand. Can anyone explain the meaning of that shot?

After he'd bought it he didnt want to eat it, wanted to throw it away but couldnt because of the thought of people starving in China. He was pontificating all this while the ice cream melted.

I see that scene as somewhat of a self parody. When Peter said, "because there are starving people in China", he said that line is such a routine, nonchalant kind of way. Even Mickey chimed in on that line. It's as though that's what everyone expects Peter to say.

I see it as a comment on a modern plentiful society who's main problem was to how to amuse itself ( an amusing line in the film). We think nothing throwing food away not knowing what it's like to suffer real hunger. Micky's attitude was indicative of that. Like whats the problem...just chuck it...
