why doesn't Roy talk?

One thing that's sort of bothered me for the last ten years is the fact that Roy doens't talk in this (or any, but mostly this) special. He visits Pepperment Patty for two big scenes, yet is completely quiet. He spoke in the comic strips. I wonder what was up here.

Roy appeared in the strips during the late 1960s. I don't know when his last appearance was. But he first appeared in a series of strips where he met Charlie Brown at camp. The next summer, Roy returned, and this time he met Linus. Then he introduced Pepperment Patty to the rest of the gang. I think Roy might have been Patty's best friend before Marcie was introduced. This special is perhaps his most major appearance, but he also made on-screen appearances in It Was a Short Summer, Charlie Brown, Snoopy Come Home, and I think Is This Goodbye, Charlie Brown?

It pains me to see that the OP has spent over ten years of his (her?) life obsessing over the fact that a fictitious character doesn't speak in this program. Honestly, wouldn't everyone? Personally, my theory is that since he hangs around Peppermint Patty he would have few opportunities to gey a word in anyhow.
