Big John Wayne fan

Was a big fan growing up.

Never seen this film.

40 min? in and thinkin' 'Man is this boring or what?'.

Can't wrap my head around the filming location either.

Alabama pine trees? Supposed to look like Vietnam?

Should I keep watching? Does it get better?

Like watching TV shows or beach movies from the '60s Green Berets was a product of its time. For example, dozens (if not hundreds) of Westerns were made that are terrible for historical accuracy but the audience loved them and paid money to see them.
Put on the movie and imagine yourself back in 1968 when there was little FM radio,Stereo recording was high-tech, telephones had dials and WW II TV shows like 12 O'Clock High, Combat, McHale's Navy, Hogan's Heroes were popular.

Absolutely! It's a typical John Wayne western, but set in a South - East Asia, that looks nothing like S E Asia, complete with a story that sat well with the Dukes patriotic ideals. Though roundly criticised (and deservedly so in many respects)I've always found amusement in that the film was a pretty big commercial success.🐭
