For what it's worth, my grandfather immigrated to the U.S. from Sicily in 1899, and almost immediately after passing through Ellis Island he and many other Italians and Sicilians were kidnapped, taken to Utah, or thereabouts, locked in chains, and used as slaves to build railroad tracks. After 6 months, he and two others escaped one night and walked/hopped trains to San Francisco. So there were at least a few there, though maybe not quite as portrayed in Spaghetti Westerns.

He should have gone to Canada. My great grandfather immigrated there from Calabria in the mid-1890s and while he worked on the railroad, too, he was not enslaved and he made a very good living with the CNR and his son and grandson (my dad) also chose to work on the railroad.
