What an incredibly offensive movie. Geez.

As I watched this, my jaw dropped. This movie was less about a biopic about Fanny Brice than it was about Hollywood trying to sell American audiences on how bankable a movie star Barbara Streisand was in spite of being so "ugy" and "Jewish" looking. Literally, half the songs and situations reference her looks in a way that is so transparent (and cruel) to the point of being cringe-inducing. Like, really, were 1960s audiences having this much of an issue about her appearance that there had to be a movie based around the concept of accepting her in spite of how she looked?

FYI the real Fanny Brice was far plainer than Babs, and in many of her acts she used a heavy Yiddish accent. And such a nose she had! Hollywood made the film because the musical had been a hit on Broadway and its star tested very well, and well. They thought they could make big bucks with a film about a Jewish gal.

So really, it got made for the same reason any movie gets made. Money.
