Omar Sharif

Did Omar Sharif do his own singing in this? I always wondered that.

reply

yes he did
another (cut) song he did was
a pink velvet jail

I certainly HOPE it was him. If not, someone who was hired to sing embarrassed himself terribly. My only complaint about this movie is that they should have hired a singer to sing for him. He can't sing at all!

As this was Barbra Striesand's first film, the fools in Hollywood thought they needed a big, well-known name for Nick as box-office insurance (the old Audrey-Hepburn-My-Fair-Lady story). This move threw the film off-kilter in a lot of ways. It's not just that the other characters in the story lost so much screen time to Striesand (though that's certainly true), but they lost screen time to Sharif as well, in the writing and development stage. As a major star, his character had to be boosted up from the stage role to match his prominence (and paycheck). Then, when all the material seemed to be nearing the running time of GONE WITH THE WIND, a lot of Act 2 Sharif (including "Pink Velvet Jail") was jettisoned, along with a lot of Anne Francis as well. Leaving A LOT of Striesand. WHY do film-makers develop so much extra material for a story that ends up cut anyway and throwing a story off-balance?
