Trying to identify this movie

POSSIBLE SPOILERS

I'm not sure if this is the movie I'm thinking of...but does this movie end with a cavalry unit riding into an ambush? I saw a movie years ago that had an ending similar to the real Fetterman massacre in the Dakotas. Loggers were harrased by indians and a cavalry unit was sent out to give chase only to foolishly ride into a trap. The movie scene was chilling because it was never shown. The setting was within distance of a fort and the massacre was only heard in the distance, occurring after the cavalry unit passed a ridge into a forrested area.

Anybody know if this is that movie?

Hi,
I just discovered the site for this movie. Truthfully, my husband and I remember it mostly for the continued western movie cliches throughout the movie. I have no memory of the plost because of the above. I know this isn't the answer you wanted, but we have both always wanted to see the movie again to see if it was as 'bad' as we remember. I do remember we saw it in conjunction with Rosemary's Baby, so this one provided us with some comic relief after the horror of RB. Do you have any idea how one might go about getting a copy of this film? Thanks for any help. Did you ever verify if you were thinking of the right movie? c

Well, I was able to find a copy. It was pirated but I doubt anyone would care. It wasn't the movie I was originally thinking of. This movie was a low budget movie made with a lot of stars (James Craig, Virginia Mayo, John Ireland) who were in decline. The fort that was used looked as if it was the same set as the one used in the remake of Beau Geste, back in '66. It wasn't a bad story and the acting wasn't bad, but it definitely reminded me more of the many old western serials made in the '30s and '40s and not of someting of this era. Low budget.

Check out the page for "Fort Massacre." I haven't seen it but have read enough about it over the years to think that might be the film you are thinking of.

Possibly Oh Susannah, a Republic film with Rod Cameron, Jim Davis, Forrest Tucker and Chill Wills.
