Underrated Jimmy Stewart Western

I thought this was a great western that deserves more recognition, with great performances by Henry Fonda and especially by the star, Jimmy Stewart. His acting, notable in the last half hour, is fantastic. A great, chilling movie that should be seen by western and Stewart fans.

I agree that this was a great western. We are fortunate that James Stewart made many great movies in his career but overall he always wanted to do a western at least once every two to three years.

It's an outstanding performance by Jimmy Stewart. This western has a lot of substance to it. It has atmosphere, great characters and a story that rises above common western formula. I like it very much.

I made the mistake. I fell in love.

I totally agree. I'm watching it right now as part of the James Stewart collection and I'm pretty dumbfounded as to why it's so underrated. Stewart especially gives an incredibly emotional performance.

This movie deserves to be widely recognized. Sometimes I watch a well known movie and go "why exactly is this considered a masterpiece?". I'm not saying anything bad about High Noon, because I DO like it. But what exactly is supposed to make High Noon one of the best, and this movie isn't known at all? The whole time I was watching this I was like "this movie has great character developement, and isn't like a traditional western" and yet it gets no recognition. I think if a couple big critics or sites got together and suddenly claimed this was a timeless movie, and people who think of themselves as real film classic fans watched it, they would be amazed by it, not even doubting it's previous status as unknown, and it would go on to be one of the all time best westerns. In all honesty, I think some people just accept what they read regarding how well liked a movie is, and just go with it. "Oh, so Citizen Kane is one of the best movies ever hmm? I AGREE TOO!!!"

I love Firecreek too. Very underated. Jimmy gives a fine performance and Fonda gives another thoughtful performance. The tenseness is fantastic. Elam and Best are always great villains but I loved Gary Lockwood as the manic womaniser. Very entertaining Western with a dramatic ending.
