Inspirational (SPOILERS)
I've never been much of a Stewart fan, but I can faithfully say that his acting at the end, the final speech he makes is some of the most moving acting I've seen in a long time.
The subject matter of this western really hit home to me. The apathy that seems to be continually tightening it's grip on society disgusts me to no end.
Henry Fonda represents the modern mentality, the take-take-take mindset that rules society, no concept of self-sacrifice, no identification with his fellow man.
I particularly enjoy the ending where Cobb has already been shot, bested by Larkin and is essentially on the chopping block with Larkin ready to deal with Cobb. But Cobb can't be dealt with or persuaded because he's no longer thinking of just himself.
Larkin in his selfishness just cannot understand the motivation of Cobb, still trying to reload his gun even though he knows he's dead. "What are you trying to prove?"
This line from Larkin is perfect, it shows the way this modern mindset functions: everything is about proof, payoff, results, the end product. He cannot conceptualize the weight or symbol of an action, the sacrificing of one's self for a cause in a single moment, it doesn't add up to Larkin because those things don't add up to profit or gain, or immediate gratification.
The fact that Evelyn kills Larkin is a perfect cap to the film; an able bodied person who has been snapped out of their trance of selfishness helps Cobb.
