What the Devil?

I don't know about any of you, but I thought it was so hilarious when Finian says "What the devil?" into the police car megaphone! Tell me what you thought was funny in the movie!

"Tell me what you thought was funny in the movie!"

Nothing.

I love the movie. I loved Tommy Steele as Og. I think he played the part extremely well. I think one of my favourite parts would be when he sings 'When I'm Not With the Girl I Love', his facial expressions add to the song immensely.

reply

"Is this what it's like to be mortal? Is every girl...the only girl?"

reply

Tommy Steele as Og was hilarious. The scene where he's crying in a pumpkin head and raises it to scream "McLonnergan!" is classic. Goodness knows why it was a pumpkin head, though!

reply

THe dialogue is actually brilliant. It might not work on younger people but those cunning refernces to other song titles of the time are great. I think the anti racism is very effective love the send when the bromide or what ever it is is delivered to the sentator. A real attack on stereotypes loved by Hollywood.

reply

The pumpkin head/jack-o'-lantern shows up in an earlier scene. One of the children has it. I'm not sure if it shows up elsewhere though the next time I watch the film, I'll look for it.

DOOOOOOOOOOM AND GLOOOOOOOOM!

Kung fu movies are like porn. There's 1 on 1, then 2 on 1, then a group scene...

I thought when Og was following Finian around in the woods inside that bush was hilarious.

reply

Howard and Buzz with the julip.

reply

When Og and Finian meet for the first time. That whole thing was hilarious.

"You'll forgive me for pointing Mr. McLonergan, but it's you!"
"Feathers! Who's the culprit?" *points at Finian*

reply

I die laughing at the mint juleo scene

-White Wolf "I don't suffer from Insanity...I enjoy Every minute of it!"

reply

I also think the scene where Og follows McLonergan around, disguised as a bush, is very funny. Also the scene where Og falls into the well and suddenly reappears using the dress as a balloon, with Sharon looking for him in vain.

The whole thing has some hysterical scenes; When Og has something to tell Finian and hethinks it's really bad, he chugs thw whiskey bottle with a shaking hand and says 'The British are back' But the scene that really had me was when Astairse sang when the idle poor become the idle rich'

He's a bounder, he's a rounder
He's a rotter, and a lot of dirty names!

When he says the last verse in that Irish tone I just fell about the place laughing!
'Meet the new boss...Same as the old Boss'

BUMP

Watched it today and yep the song still makes me laugh!

I adored the part when Og kisses Susan and says something I can't remember now, but the look on his face and the tone are so devilish!!

"Fairyland was nothing like this!"

Thank you! It was driving me crazy... just ordered the DVD from Amazon.... can't wait to watch it ... for the 100th time :)

I like the part where Og (Tommy Steele) is asking Finian (Fred Astaire) if he's ever been in love, meanwhile quoting a song famously introduced by Fred Astaire:

Og says something like, "Haven't you ever heard the beat, beat, beat of the tom-tom, when the jungle shadows fall, in the silence of your lonely room?"

Yeah, I laughed at a lot of stuff.... Keenan Wynn is really funny, and I agree with everybody about the mint julep scene. "I'm a comin' boss! Fast as I can!" I was dying. Og has a few funny lines... "I came into the country disguised as a Christmas Tree."

Did I not love him, Cooch? MY OWN FLESH I DIDN'T LOVE BETTER!!! But he had to say 'Nooooooooo'

There are way too many hilarious moments in this movie to list them all...

But my FAVES are:

1. OG plunging headfirst into the water (after Finian berates him)
2. The Senator and Howard with that 'mint julep' (it was way obvious that Keenan Wynn was trying VERY HARD to 'cry' during that moment of his Senator's "frustration", when it was way obvious he was trying not to laugh hysterically)
(Very bad re-shoot and editing!)

3. Woody, surprising Sharon on the bridge, just before their 'Ol Devil Moon' duet.
4. OG's cap feather pointing at Finian, and Finian's response.
5. OG's expression after Susan passionately kisses him.

They should show this movie in the ghetto on movie night!
