Hold it.....

Ok the scene where the senator and Og are talking. The senator says that he was changed into a black man by Sharon, the subtitles say "Some witch turned me black" or something like that, and Og responds with "a witch!?" but I'm pretty sure what he said was "Some b-tch turned me black." Anyone else hear it?

Idiots are fun. No wonder every village wants one.

reply

Ha. That's what I heard, too. He clearly says, "Some b-tch turned me black".

I wonder if perhaps Keenan Wynn said this out loud and Coppola didn't hear it? Or maybe he was supposed to say that because Og thought that he said "witch". It's a good question, I'd like to know the answer.

"What I want to know is how we're going to stay alive this winter."

reply

OMG he totally did say "b!+ch"!

I wonder how that got past the 1968 censors? Lol!

On a side note....this scene makes me like Og even more :D .

Are you kidding??!!!

That was a friggen hilariously overlooked moment! I'm still LMAO over it.

"I said nothing of the sort!....Some B**** WISHED IT on me!"

And a niiiiiice cover from Tommy Steele too!

:D

reply

I thought I heard a "b" there, too, so I first turned on the subtitles (which say "witch"), and then replayed the scene 3 more times. Sure enough, he says the b-word!!

"Bitch" was no big deal in a 1968 film, and I'm sure its use was planned.

Otto Preminger used it in Anatomy of a Murder (1959) and Advise and Consent (1962).

It was used in The Fortune Cookie (1966) and The Americanization of Emily (1964).

And quite a few others, I would imagine -- those are just ones I remember.

The joke was that Og didn't know the word, since I guess it is not used in Fairyland, and assumed he'd heard "witch."

When the Senator sees himself in the rear-view mirror of the car as he us being attacked by Stonewall after Sharon's wish, he says "I'll be a son-of-a-bitch," so of course he called her a "bitch" when talking to Og.
