Such A Lot Of Hype For An Awful Movie.

Awful. I was edgy and annoyed from the beginning. I fast forwarded it to the thirty minute mark and eventually I pulled the plug at 65 minutes. While I was watching this shouting drunk fest I was reminiscing about the two classic Law and Order episodes that Val Avery appeared in. I thought about all the great characters John Marley played. Then I thought why am I wasting my time on this turkey? No fun at all.

"Faces" is in no way a fun movie. I've seen most of Cassavees work and he is undoubtedly one of my favorite film makers of all time. "Faces" is the only Cassavetes movie I required multiple sittings to get through (and that's after shutting it off half way through my initial viewing). It is easily his most challenging movie to watch, and Cassavette movies are usually challenging enough, especially to the unsuspecting viewer.

However the very things that make this movie challenging are what I admire about it. The rawness of "Faces" is what makes it so powerful. Even after just one of a handful of scenes, with their great acting, uncomfortably intimate and slightly off center mise-en-scene, etc. I am left utterly exhausted. On the one hand, this makes the film hard to watch in one sitting, for this and other reasons I prefer to watch most of his other films. However the fact the film posses such sheer, raw power is why I, in a way, admire "Faces" the most of his movies.
