Maria's dad (the priest) was extremely rude.

Just because he's atheist, doesn't mean he's a bad person or you had to be rude to him. He was just being honest, and yet, he tells him to go away from his house. That was fukcin' rude!

The events take place during the Victorian era. The Monsignor is initially offended and rude, but this can be excused on the grounds that he's the father-figure to his beloved niece and he's naturally concerned about the character of the man she's dating & considering marrying; besides there's a warmhearted scene later in the film where the Monsignor proves his loving nature.
