Why the poor rating?

At present this film has only a 5.7 rating on this website. I actually thought this film version was quite good and gave it an 8/10. Although Marlowe's play is shortened to only about 90 minutes the film contains some of Marlowe's best poetry. I especially liked the way Burton delivered the line "Is this the face that launched a thousand ships". Elizabeth Taylor as Helen of Troy was a lustful temptation for Faustus, though she appeared only briefly and didn't speak except for her laughing at the end. This movie was well acted by the other characters (especially by Richard Burton (Faustus) and Andreas Tueber (Mephistopheles). There were also some students from Oxford University, but I don't think they were too amateurish. The sets were inexpensive, but they added to the film's haunting atmosphere. And of course the music was sombre and sad. It was this film which drew my interest in the play so many years ago. Maybe some day a better one will be made (there is a newer recorded version of the play which I haven't seen). But I was always intrigued by this old interpretation. It was a tragic experience that worked for me.

Because many fools in this site vote...

Too many philistines, that's why.

You like the Helen of Troy love scene. I loved the "A sound magician is a mighty god" soliloquy that Faustus speaks near the beginning of the film. Sad that Marlowe died so young.
