1967 article about the making of The Devil's Brigade

I read this article many years ago in Sentinel Magazine (a defunct Canadian Forces publication) and came across it again recently while going through boxes of old things in my mother's basement. The article was published in October 1967, prior to the release of the movie in '68, and provides some interesting insights into the making of the movie as well as factual information about the First Special Service Force (including how they really got their nickname, The Black Devil's Brigade).

I scanned the article as four .jpg files, and the zip file can be downloaded here

Edit: 12/06/2011 The article is now available for download as a single pdf file at http://www.mediafire.com/?2w1ige6qv6rcgx9

Enjoy.

Very interested in he article but my computer guard system said only do so at your own risk. Any chance you can just post the text?

A lot of security programs will say that whenever you want to download any type of file. Simply download it and then scan the file with your anti-virus program before you open it to put your mind at ease.

I can't post the text because I would need to manually type out the entire article as well as wouldn't be able to post the pictures. They system would probably reject the written article, anyway, as being too long.

Hello there budman57

Just wanted to send a shout out of thanks for the url to the article. Also for your most interesting comments on the movie.

I saw this as a little girl way back when, growing up in NYC. I was about 13/14ish I guess and it definitely left an impression on me. Yes, it seemed to be a Dirty Dozen spinoff but I always thought that movie was more of a goofball war entertainment type of movie. The Devils Brigade left a more sober impression, all business, not much funny stuff. Always liked William Holden(the man and the actor!) and his supporting cast were more than up to the task of respectfully portraying the real life heroes that they were.

Just finished watching it again, on TCM(FL,USA) and was thoroughly transfixed by their excellent portrayals. I always enjoyed the bar/lumberjack dustup but had forgotten their foray into Italy and how they climbed that cliff and took possession of that mtn top! Nevermind how they took that village held by the Germans. From the beginning, the locations are quite picturesque, from the snow capped peaks of Utah, standing in for Canada to the skiing scenes to the ending scramble up/fighting skirmish on that mountaintop. Someone mentioned a gay type of veil over some of the scenes but to me it was more of a BROMANCE type, all rough and tough, but lovingly and quite touching.

For those worried about the downloaded files, no worries there. Just need to download iLivid video player and it pops up just fine as a readable and clear PDF. Yes, my virus protection SW checked it out PRIOR to the download and it's just waiting for me to alt TAB and go read it. Can't wait! Im outta here. ENJOY and thanks again budman57!
Ciao for now,
