Why the association of gay culture with bodybuilding?

Can anybody explain why was it that homosexuality was connected to bodybuilding in this film? Like how Sinatra's character said to check out gyms as if those were a breeding ground for gays?

Because bodybuilding was a sub-culture activity and thought-to-be unusual by the mainstream, Steve Reeves even having a gay following and being mentioned in the camp classic The Time Warp. Furthermore, bodybuilding mags were found in the apartment of the deceased as was oil used for posing - this was something Leyland latched onto.

Until the 70's, bodybuilding and fitness mags were some of the few "mainstream" outlets to see semi-nude, well-built male bodies. A gay guy could buy these mags at virtually any newsstand without fear of being labeled as the "other."

Suppose a man is aroused only when another man is fully dressed ? That means he is the "other" according to many gays including those who work as attendants in mental hospitals. In the 1960s many mental hospital employees were gay and lesbian. They decided what was normal and what wasn't.

Even today Gyms often are homosexual hangouts. Of the several ones I've gone to, there have been a couple where after a while I start noticing a certain "vibe" and I just leave and find some other place. No disrespect to homosexuals but I'm just not into that.

It was a combination of the mags and the mineral oil, which some body builders use to enhance their look at shows. In another movie, one of the characters said, "They use it to show off their meat".

"Muscle Mags" back in the day were to gay men what Victoria's Secret and National Geographic were to straight men.
