The demoiselles' dancing skills

Did anyone else find the demoiselles' dancing skills somewhat lacking?

Don't get me wrong, I enjoyed the movie. So much so that I watched the whole thing twice, and bits and pieces even more often than that.

But during their dancing parts, the sisters seemed very stiff and awkward and didn't display much grace. This detracted from the movie, especially since Delphine is portrayed as a professional and talented dancer/ballerina.

Anyone agree/disagree?

reply

I agree. Also, Solange's dancing is better than Delphine's which is ironic as the former's fotre is supposed to be as a composer while the latter's art is the dance.

According to the end credits almost all the featured dancers were Anglo/American. Why is this? Was there a shortage of French dancers in the sixties? Or weren't they any good for this medium?

By the way, I love this movie and consider it one of Demy's best. It's a wonderful film - the colours and backgrounds, the music, the lyrics, the dancing, the constantly moving camera... and the excellent English subtitles! - make it a memorable viewing experience.

The choreographer of the film, Norman Maen, was Irish, and his work prior to this film was primarily on stage and in television in Ireland, the U.S., Canada and London, where he had his own dance company, so I assume he hired his own Anglo dancers for the film.

I agree *and* disagree.

I agree that the sisters aren't as gifted as dancers as, say, Chikiris and Kelly.

I disagree with the part about that significantly detracting from the movie.

I think that they did a pretty good job n the movie of choreographing them so as to allow them to look reasonable, even if close examination still reveals that they don't move quite like the real pro dancers.

Not only all that, but I was shocked to see that Deneuve hardly had the body of a dancer. I guess I thought all these years that she was lean and tight. Say what you will about today's standards of fitness, but you have to be way into the camp to ignore her soft physique and droopy movement.
