Better than early Bond films?

I must say, I enjoyed Danger: Diabolik more than the early Sean Connery era Bond films. This may come across as film sacrilege, understandably, to make such a statement, but I really believe Diabolik takes me to a place that Bond films don't.

For a male/action/spy/fantasy film, Diabolik has better pacing, more action, sicker bad guys, groovier sets, sexier women, cooler gadgets and a really hip anti-hero. I love Goldfinger, Thunderball, From Russia With Love, etc. but I have to say that the subplots and espionage scenarios now seem boring and dated. Every aspect of Diabolik is fun, adventurous and "exhilarating". And isn't Diabolik's lifestyle more alluring than 007's.

Not trying to disrespect the Bond film series, which made a movie like Diabolik possible. I just wish more people knew about this lost gem.

Hotter women maybe, but this is not better than Connery's Bond movies.

It's not better than the early Bond Connery movies but better than the Roger Moore ones. That hot Marisa Mell should have been a Bond girl. She was the perfect 60's babe.

reply

Nah, Roger Moore was also better. His films grow on you.

I certainly enjoy it a lot more than Thunderball.

I'm not sure I'd say this better than the early Bonds, although it may be. But I will say that Sean Connery is certainly one of the most overrated actors of all time. The whole concept that Roger Moore is so horrendously worse than Connery is ridiculous. Not suggesting that Roger Moore is anywhere near the level of Craig or Dalton, but he and Connery are on the same level. Connery manages to run the gamut of emotions from A to A- in all his performances.

I definitely like Diabolik better than the Bond films.

I noticed something tonight while channel-surfing that I hadn't though of before: Not sure if Diabolik's suction-cup climb was taken from the comics source or was just a mimick of a scene in Bond's 'You Onry Rive Twice', which came out only 6 months or so earlier than Diabolik (you know, the one where Bond's 'Japanese' disguise is less convincing than Diabolik's photographer disguise).

I can't believe that actually turned out to be a serious post. Are you one of those "like the foreign movie better automatically because it makes me seem cultured and high-brow" people so you feel COMPELLED to say that?

I eagerly await your next post, of why Billy Madison was better than Casablanca.
Or maybe why Dude Where's My Car was better than Gone with the Wind.

The absolute worst Bond film would still be a Best Picture nominee compared to Diabolik. Its like this movie was done as a joke on purpose.

lost gem? a really hip anti-hero? exhilarating? what place could diabolik possibly take you to? Granted, there are worse movies then this, but a classic? Besides, John Phillip Law makes Roger Moore seem like Lawrence Olivier...

i love this film, but i wouldn't say its better than the early James Bond films (definitely better than the later ones though......)

you know there is a problem when games are smarter than movies

reply

After a recent marathon, I would say all the Bond films are better than this. Yeah, all of them.

It's not fair to compare this movie to any Bond picture. It's based on a comic book and isn't about a superspy but a thief. Plus it was at the height of the campy 60's movies like Modesty Blaise. It's just supposed to be fun and nothing more.
