Does it make anyone sick that...

They had Diabolik in that stupid ass beep beep MST3K show?

First of all, I really despise that show, even the worst possible movies that they show don't deserve to be shown in that way, but a classic movie like Diabolik? It just pisses me off, if they didnt have Diabolik in that show, the avarage vote in IMDB for it would probably be 7,9 instead of 4,9 or something (or at least 6,9)

I really, really hate that show. Anyway, Diabolik is coming out on dvd on July 13th this year... don't miss it.

Alright Mr. Poe, so you like that movie. MST3K is just a show (as they say in the opening credits.) ergo you don't have to watch it if you don't like it.
Don't know about it being a classic, though.

Well, it was quite a bit better than many films that have been ridiculed on MST3K, but it sure is one campy-ass movie. It's like a James Bond film with fewer hot women, a smaller bankroll, and wigs galore. Plus, it is one of the best MST3K's ever, with some absolutely classic lines in it.

And who was it who sings the opening song? Charo or something? All while the movie looks like a toilet flushing...

"Deep, deep, down..."

Hi, Anton, this is Abe here. I totally concur. It's a *beep* awesome psychadelic flick. I like MST3K but I think there are a bunch of movies that I think are actually quite good and that they shouldn't have used including Gorgo, Squirm and this of course (as well as This Island Earth). They are at their funniest when they're spoofing hilariouslt dated educational shorts, not decent, entertaining B-movies. I think we should all gives films that we think have been given bad reputations by MST3K "10" ratings to try and boost their scores.

December 2nd.....so where's the DVD release then ????? Paramount have postponed it indefinitely. Is there going to be a release or not?

reply

The original disk was going to be bare bones, Paramount has postponed it so they could add extras. I guess good things come to those who wait. My personal guess is next summer.

KHAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAN!!!!

reply

I'm not hearing anything about the film hitting DVD with extras, but I hope you're right. As for the posts above about the film being on MST3K and whether or not it's a classic...the film is looked upon as a "cult classic" here in the U.S., but has a much larger following abroad. The film was based on a widely successful long-running European comic strip, which is still seeing print/reprint after all these decades. (Someone compared it to the James Bond films...obviously they are unfamiliar with the film's source material.) International response to the film was such that producer Dino De Laurentiis wanted to make a sequel. However, when his friend & frequent collaborator, director Mario Bava, declined to be involved; De Laurentiis decided to shelve the idea rather than go forward without him. As for the film being on MST3K...I don't know if the film's appearance there really hurt it or not. Fans of the film would not be influenced by that and I know several people who, after having seen a title on MST3K, have sought out the original. In fact, a number of films might have been overlooked or forgotten had they not shown up on Mystery Science Theatre, because they certainly weren't getting airtime anywhere else. (I do have to salute the line of MST3K DVDs, which think enough of film fans to not only include their lampooning of a film, but to also include the original, uncut version of each movie on the DVD as well.)

reply

Why can't a movie be good and be MST3K'ed? I mean, I love This Island Earth, and Jack Frost, etc, but this just makes it better.

"Well, my cherry tomato detector's operational, that's good..."

Why the hate?

reply

In your opinion...however, the film has a huge following. I think your's is the first negative reaction I've read since first encountering the film back in the 1970s.

reply

no,YOU make me sick.

reply

First off, MST3K Rules!! Second, a classic? Where, in Europe? There is NO following here in the states, let's get that straight. No one here would have even seen it had it not been for MST3K. Was it horrible, no. But get off your soapbox, saying it made you sick to see it on MST. Only serious dramas should be MST free. Every thing else is fair game. This movie was cheesy, as are all movies starring John Philip Law.

Anyway, it sounds like you have no sense of humor by just trashing MST. Either that or just no taste. After all, you do think this movie is a classic (lol).

The ony advantage of it being on that show was that it has different English dialogue than the DVD has.

any movie which has a credits scene with paint splattered on a record player is in need of being eviscerated on MST3K

Actually it deserves any disrespect it gets. This is one of the worst movies ever made. How anyone over the age of 8 could like this is beyond me.

It's called a difference of opinion. That happens from time to time, but mature adults don't belittle someone for believing differently.

I enjoy the film, but hardly consider it to be a work of art. It's entertaining and imaginative; but, it has some goofy English dialogue and some occasionally cheap effects. MSTK was a fine show, but I found that the entertainment value depended on the movie and how inspired the jokes were. I enjoyed their take on this film, as much as Samson vs The Vampire Women (aka Santo vs The Vampire Women), another film I enjoyed in the original form.

it's no worse than what the OP said-They had Diabolik in that stupid ass beep beep MST3K show? Calling it those things can be considered insulting to fans-implying they're stupid for liking it (after all only stupid ass people would watch a stupid show). Just like the OP, all the commenter did was state their opinion in a strong way.

The poster quoted above deserves to be _(insert delete worthy comment here)_. Diabolik is one of the best guilty pleasure movies ever made. Much better than all that Michael Bay crap people spend money on.

MST3K is 'just a show', right? No, it's a cultural movement to ridicule low budget movies that don't always deserve the derision and outright mocking that show gives them. It also made it seem culturally acceptable for every jagoff heckler in a movie audience to think that people need to hear their own personal running commentary broadcast to everyone. People don't just do that for really bad movies, but for just about any movie.

Some of the movies shown on MST3K are crap, some are just unfortunate enough to be picked. Forrest Gump is more deserving of the MST3K treatment than Diabolik because it's pure cheese with a big budget and name stars whereas Diabolik is an entertaining very low budget movie based on a comic book.

The talentless hack from MST3K is now doing Rifftrax which mocks not just bad popular movies, but any popular movies. The guy has no other place in the entertainment world because all he can do is mock movies, which essentially makes him a paid imdb forum member, but in audio format. He'd better spend time mocking Cold Case or CSI: Miami which are ripe for it and would provide endless material.

Yes, Diabolik gets the shaft by MST3K because most people now assume it is a bad movie merely due to its appearance on the show. Some people in America know of Diabolik despite MST3K's trashing of it. I learned of it years ago from an article by DVD Savant, which was my introduction to the films of the talented, but underrated director Mario Bava. Wanna complain about a Bava film? Try his crappy generic spaghetti westerns and leave the good cult classics alone.

Nice try and I think Sandy Frank was another untalented hack and him and Carl Macek know what they could do w/ each other in h--- (if there was one). I have not worked in the film industry.

MST3K BLOWS HARD! (like the aforementioned hacks)

I've already stated that MST3K exists to cash-in on believing oneself superior not only to really bad films, but to any film in general as a result of the lack of ability to create anything of value or meaning. It's a cultural movement embraced by those who weren't necessarily born retarded, but who became that way through contact with their environment.

A lot of Bava fans despise MST3K for that episode and that Diabolik is now grouped in as a 'crappy film' thanks to the talentless idiot on that show. Diabolik was a low budget guilty pleasure comic book movie, but a solid one (especially compared to mindless dreck like Barbarella) and anyone who refuses to see that doesn't deserve to be taken seriously at their critique of films. Anyone who claims to like Dario Argento films and then criticizes Bava's work is just showing that they are an idiot. It's like admiring Kurosawa's films, but claiming that John Ford sucks. For someone who thinks they're into horror films, you seem completely clueless of their history. Maybe next you can 'enlighten us' with how bad Val Lewton's films were...

Mike Nelson is a talentless hack wannabe comedian. Anyone that finds him to be the apex of comedy probably is behind the ticket sales of crap like Date Movie, Epic Movie, Meet the Spartans, etc. Even Michael Bay has more value as an entertainer than Mike Nelson. Nelson has about as much value to the entertainment industry as Rex Reed.

Bava had more talent in his little finger than Nelson has in his whole body. Bava also made one of the best looking black and white films ever: Black Sunday (aka La Maschera deel demonio). Mario Bava was a genius cinematographer and has influenced lots of filmmakers, while your beloved Mike Nelson has influenced lots of teenagers who smoke way too much pot.

You should at the very least be able to see why it actually affects Diabolik.
They show a edited down version of the movie with dumb jokes being made and many people's thoughts on Diabolik are forever stuck in the 'it was on MST3K so it must be a crappy movie' column. Most of them will never see the film in its normal (non-MST3K) version and appreciate it as the great piece of popcorn entertainment that it is.

Yes, there are some people who were introduced to the film by MST3K who will go on to see it on dvd uncut and without the lame joke track. I'd rather see it remain slightly obscure cult movie than be known to lots of people as a bad movie due to the idiotic humor of a few untalented individuals whose career high point will probably be appearing in what amounts to 3rd rate modern SNL skits.

If MST3K had only concentrated on really bad movies, it might not be such an issue. The blockbusters mocked by rifftrax won't be affected too much because people will have seen them normal prior to hearing a bunch of mediocre 8th grade humor comments annexed to them. Lesser known cult classics don't have that luxury and when quite a few people's first exposure to a cult film is through MST3K it will taint the film in most of their minds forever. It devalues the films in a way that will be irreparable to a number of viewers.

Hardly. If you do a little research, you'll find most of these low-budget films found notoriety and cult status BECAUSE of MST3000, and most of the filmmakers give kudos to the show for making their work a part of the popular culture. In one specific instance, David Giancola praises MST3000 for introducing Time Chasers to many future fans of the film.

Some filmmakers WANTED mass exposure, and while some may not have enjoyed the MST3000 treatment, others were overjoyed that their film finally found an audience.

Furthermore, I don't like being demeaned simply because I enjoy the comedy of three men who made a point in saying we do not have to praise a film simply because it was released. I am not of the mindset to go see "Epic Movie" or "Date Movie" (which are such horrendous pieces of garbage that I cannot honestly see how you would compare them to MST300). I enjoy a Godard film or a Wong Kar-Wai movie as much as the next film buff; however, I do see merit in MST300, and I highly doubt that takes anything away from me. In short, don't generalize an audience who enjoys a film. Like stereotyping, it's unfair and rather ignorant.

Well, obviously this is a problem because no one can decide which movies are "really bad" or not. You like this movie -- I didn't, particularly. I like Plan 9 From Outer Space -- other people think it's crap. For every movie on IMDB with 1s, there are other people who gave it 10s, and they're not all fanboys with an agenda. What are you gonna do?
