If you would like Sony to release THE CRIMSON CULT on DVD...

If you would like THE CRIMSON CULT (CURSE OF THE CRIMSON ALTAR) to be released on DVD, I urge everyone who reads this who wants this title and for the Midnite Movies series to continue as it should, write to Chris Franchino, who manages MGM catalog marketing, at [email protected] and David Bishop at [email protected] who heads the MGM DVD department at Sony.

Is the print from Sinister Cinema any good?

I finally gave up waiting for MGM/Fox to put this out and recently purchased the Sinister Cinema DVD-R. The print is pretty good overall, I'd give it a "B". It's in full frame 1.33:1 but it's the open matte version so if you have a widescreen TV you can enlarge it and watch it in 1.85:1 widescreen. The color is a wee bit undersaturated and it's not quite as sharp and detailed as a high-quality commercial DVD but still very watchable overall, even enlarged to widescreen ratio, with no scratches or other blemishes to speak of and acceptable brightness/contrast. It does have the odd-sounding "synthesizer" score so I would bet it was mastered from the Laserdisc edition. Even before I read the reviews here I was questioning whether it was the original score, it has sort of a "1980s" sound to it. All in all I am not disappointed with the purchase although I'd still like to see a commercial DVD release. It's kind of irritating to hear the movie companies whine about bootleggers when they're sitting on films like this that obviously have a built-in audience ready to purchase a legitimate copy (if and when it ever comes out).

Seems to have been delayed to July 7 2015.

Looks like a decent blu-ray.

The PQ is great but sadly it has an awful re-dubbed music track!

I didn't mind the music but I'd like to hear the music that was originally there so I can watch the film as intended. Oh well, it was a fun movie overall and I don't regret buying it. Nothing new storywise but I like these kinds of stories so that doesn't matter. And you can't go wrong with Christopher Lee, Boris Karloff, AND Barbara Steele. Just one of them in a movie would be enough but all three of them together makes it incredible by default.
