Listed Here As Rated R

It was rated GP when I was a kid (what would be later known as PG.) Look at the old poster, and you will see the GP rating. Why is it suddenly rated R?

 The bad news is you have houseguests. There is no good news. 

Because Virginia Wetherell (Eve) is shown totally nude from behind in one scene, as well as the 'shocking' diabolical opening ritual and the hedonistic party at the manor, both of which include at least semi-nudity.

The MPAA hasn't been consistent over the years when it comes to how they decide to give movies their ratings. In the early seventies, they were more lenient about nudity, I think. Some movies got away with a little bit of it and still were rated PG. Later, that would pretty much get you an automatic R.

My guess is that this movie had to be resubmitted for some reason, and by that time the standards had changed. What was once considered PG was now enough to earn an R rating.

OK, I looked into this movie a little because I was curious about the soundtrack, which sounded like it was made on a synthesizer in the 80s or 90s, which is odd since this movie was released in the early 70s.

Turns out when the movie was first released in the US, all the nudity was edited out, which explains the PG rating. I just finished the R rated version, and there was more nudity than you could get away with in a PG movie even back then.

this movie was released in the early 70s.

It was shot in January, 1968, and originally released in the UK at the end of 1968, which makes it a late 60's flick. However, it is true that it didn't debut in the USA until April, 1970.
