Is there a book too?

Hey,
I was at one of my friends houses and saw part of this movie - it looked like it was pretty good. I heard there was a book too called "For Algernon" or something like that. Is there a book this movie is based on? Has anyone read it ... is it good? Thanks a lot!

reply

Yes, this was based on "Flowers for Algernon". I read both the novel and the short story and both were rather sad at the end. It had a very deep feeling to it.Charlie could be anyone that cannot do what everyone else can, like fit in with people.

reply

i've read the book...its really good, and sad. it's one of my favorites :-)

reply

yeah we just read the short story in English, it was good

the short story in my literature class

Our english class read "Flowers For Algernon".

It was very interesting. Our teacher had inkblots. This is what happened:

Teacher: What does this one look like to you?
Guy next to me: Two people kissing.
(He had been talking about being in love with the teacher, the day before.)
Guy: They are both men.

Then during the kissing scene, he was like, "YEAH, CHARLIE!!"
Nevertheless, it made the movie interesting.

It seems so long to read for some odd reason

I read the short story last year in English and then I read the long version over the summer. Both of them were really sad but good books. Our class was watching the movie but our teacher didn't let us finish it.

reply

I'm reading the book right now. I've only finished Progress Report 12 but it's a great book so far. I wonder what the movie will be like?

I guess this is a really popular book to read in public schools these days???

I'm glad it is getting the exposure it deserves. It seems like most of the students here really enjoy the book. Is this the majority's view?

reply

Yeah. I'm in highschool (In Denmark), and we've just finished the book in English. And we just saw the movie.

reply

I read it on its own, no assignment to make me do it. I thought the subject was very interesting and just jumped in blindly. The movie DOES NOT do the book justice. I saw it waiting for key parts to come up but didn't. And Clarlie's mental progression was slow, as evidenced in his writings and thoughts. And I thought it was dumb that someone GAVE Algernon to Charlie. In the book he steals Charlie to help him see how his degredation would progress. And they certainly did't show what happened to Smart Charlie after he gets drunk or when he finds his family. Robertson didn't do the retarded bit as effectively as could have been done. All in all, the movie is ok but read the book to get the full effect. Especially the ending. To see Charlie come around full circle as it was in the beginning was really painful.

reply

We just read it for school.

reply

all that stuff was in the book... not the original short story.

reply

the novel sucked, end point. it was just an afterthought to the short story (which was much better, the novel just had some extra paragraphs and "character development"). haven't seen the movie yet, but i keep hearing about this "psychadelic" part in it?? please clarify?

reply

it's distubing that the makers of the movie had to make it in to a love story .. i think it would have worked just fine without that element ..

The book is great. I first read it in back in Jr. high school and it has been a favorite of mine ever since. I like the movie, but cannot find a copy of it anywhere, any one know where I can get my hands on it.

reply

Mitch0983, I got a copy of the novel from Hastings bookstore. If you don't have one around you try any bookstore really. If it is not on the shelf, ask them to get it for you. Or you could go to any one of the book selling computer sites and try to get it that route.

My bff read this in high school and recommended it alot. Our year didn't read it as we had a diffrent book we "had" to read that year. But I asked the teacher if she would lend me a copy to read because my friend had said I must read it because it is such a great book. So she said they usually do not lend out the books we are not currently reading, but she would let me read it since my heart was set on it. I LOVED it. I would recommend that every person read this book because it really opens the eyes to a subject we normally avoid.

Of all the books and story we read in school I only remember 2. "Flowers for Algernon" and "Fahrenheit 451." Both books were ones that I enjoyed alot and made me open my eyes a bit to the world.

I totally agree with you, Linkin...

I read the original short story many years ago in college, as part of a course on Science Fiction. And now I am about to appear in a play based on the story, or rather the expanded novel version. It will be running on Nov. 21-23 at the Paris Fairgrounds (Paris, ON) if anyone is interested. I will be playing one of the scientists, Dr. Strauss (who was rewritten as a woman in the 1968 film).

I read "Flowers For Algernon" when it was first published. I believe it was in The Magazine of Fantasy and Science Fiction which I subscribed to during the days when I was an avid science fiction fan.
