Taxi cab sequence

Why was Bullitt in the taxi cab while being followed by the hit men, which he didn't realize at first? I get he was trying to recreate what Ross did but what was he trying to figure out? The taxi driver told him that Ross even made 2 phone calls from the pay phone. Bullitt then gets out of the cab again to make another call? Who was he calling?

reply

Because he is a cop - systematical, knowing that if you play a scene before a witness, the witness will most likely remember something he did not 'know' at first. The - second - long distance call for instance...

As the cabdriver, is this one of Robert Duvall's first featured roles in a film?

reply

Duvall played Boo Radley in To Kill a Mockingbird avfew years earlier.

Yes! I thought I recognized him!

The name Sunshine Cab Company is mentioned numerous times in the film. Was the cab company in the TV series "Taxi" named Sunshine Cab in honor of "Bullitt?"

reply

Most likely, it's just a generic brand made up by Hollywood for use in fiction, so as not to infringe on real people and real brands. Like the airline Oceanic that is used in a similar way.

I have always had the idea that he is calling his underworld informant to arrange to meet up. The meeting I think was the next scene.

Seems like such a waste of Duval. Would have liked to see he and Fell switch places.

Sometimes use of a generic name allows the use of "stock" footage, so you can use a cab scene or airline scene from another movie without the expense of filming it. Some of the footage in TH&TM was used in other movies. So it makes sense to use theTrans Oceanic Airlines name.
