The sound of the Mustang

Must've watched this in the theater half a dozen times back in the day. Therr is something awesome about the sound the Mustang makes undar heavy acceleration. I suspect it is due to the old technology carburetor gulping vast quantities of air. Evan aftar all the years, still considar this to be the ultimate filmed car chase. Can rember my stomach jumping into my throat during the chase when it shows the view from the interior as the cars go ovar the hills.

I once read some discussion that the Mustang's sound was dubbed in from a Ford GT40. I'm rather dubious, mainly due to how the double-shift sound syncs up with puffs of blue smoke coming from the Mustang's tailpipes towards the end when they're going up a hill on the highway.

So, if it's not coming from the Mustang but dubbed in, someone did an absolutely remarkable job of sound editing. In fact, it's worth noting that the film was nominated for an academy award for sound editing so it might be the case. At the very least, the blue puffs of smoke indicate the Mustang 'was' being double-clutched.

The sound is monstrous, to say the least. Kudos to the sound editor - I can't imagine a lovlier and more perfect sound coming from this ultra cool beast of a mustang.

The sound was powerful, and went a long way toward making the car chase as great as it was. Like the OP, I remember seeing this in a theater and feeling my stomach jump during the interior shots when the car jumped the hills. It was a big surprise the first time, but my friends and I went back a few more times (admission only half a buck in '68) just for the chase, like it was a Disneyland ride, and the visceral effect worked every time even though we knew it was coming.
