R?

Why rated R?

reply

Do you wonder why it was rated "R" in the USA? Well those prudish morons (MPAA) rated R 'Stand by Me', go figure.

PG-13 would be a more reasonable rating for this wonderful Chabrol's movie. Anyway who cares about MPAA ratings? Certainly not me.

Because americans are puritans?

Well, when was this rating given? Both public attitudes and MPAA attitudes were significantly more conservative in 1968 than they are today. (Having said that, an R was a slightly less conservative rating in '68 than it is now, as it used to indicate that under 16s needed parental accompaniment, rather than under 17s.) And as there was no such thing as PG-13 in those days, it would have been a choice between R and PG.

Having said that, the British Board of Film Classification rated this film 15 as recently as 1999 - which again is a very conservative rating and yet a comparatively recent one.

I think 15 is about right because the film deals with adult issues and themes.

I give my respect to those who have earned it; to everyone else, I'm civil.

reply

This is a very tame Chabrol film.
