Aussie dvd?

Is there a region 4 release out there & is it the correct 2.35:1 widescreen?

Thanks

I'm picking up a region-free dvd edition on ebay. Should play in Australia too, but I don't know yet if it's widescreen.

You can get this in WIDESCREEN 2.35:1, beautiful print, from a company called Marengo Films based out of the US. I own it, got it thru amazon.com for around $10. It's a double disc with GO FOR BROKE. I've never seen a better looking version.

Yes you`re right, it is a nice widescreen print and the bonus is "Go For Broke" is a cracking film too!

I had my doubts as to the quality of Alamein as most of these Italian films from the same period are usually characterized by terrible acting, atrocious dubbing, silly comedic plots and general all-round cheapness. This has a sizeable budget by comparison and a director who seems to know what he`s doing. It`s also got a much tougher, grittier edge which lifts it far above those such offerings. The 2.35:1 scope is often used to good effect during the quite impressive and lengthy action sequences such as long sweeping shots of tanks on a hillside.Lots of authentic looking gear althougth the armour has clearly been cobbled together from any army that would lend them. The "British" tanks look quite similar to the ones used in "Battle Of The Bulge"(sure someone can tell me what they are).

Largely told from the Italian perspective, and in particular a group of the Folgore Division(Italian Paratroops)with a smattering of Bersaglieri.Decent dialogue and the dubbing really isn`t too bad.We also see the German,British sides and Michael Rennie as Monty really does work: often with some appropriately asperic Monty dialogue:"It smells down here." Some almost unbelievable Italian heroics at the end as a handful of men manage to disable an endless stream of tanks buts it`s an enjoyable watch and a quality Italian production which has been largely overlooked.

The Marengo Films dvd is very satisfying in that it is widescreen but it is unfortunately missing some footage. All scenes with Ira Fürstenberg are nowhere to be found but, ironically, they are present in the otherwise cut German dvd. I'm hoping someone will put out a complete English-language print some time - with the Fürstenberg scenes included.
