Weapon Anachranisms

the film was made in 1968 and says it is set 200 years ago, making the setting 1768. During this time, before the revolutionary war, Muskets that had to be reloaded after every shot were the standard weapon. Yet the characters are seen using Winchester-type cocked rifles and *beep* pistols. Can anyone explain this to me?

Sure! Three words: Its A Movie! :D

Don't get me wrong, I recreate the Spanish colonial era so the firing anachronism just yelled out at me, particularly when Teclo's henchman is skulking about the church after shooting at Quinn & the priest. Then there's the rifle accurate ability of the muskets in the movie when the real ones were grossly inaccurate at medium distances.

That said, during the big battle note that Quinn's character hands off his discharged musket for reloading in exchange for a loaded one. Further, the muskets of the Spanish military & those Quinn stockpiles are generally shown to be flinters with 3 brass stockbands, just like the originals. Yeah the flint screws aren't exactly like the originals but that's a small detail ;)

I'm just glad they got the uniforms of the Spanish lancers right! Its such a rare treat to see a movie set in this era & location and also see it feature the right kind of Spanish cavalry!

This is true. This is the closest you'll get to many movies spending onscreen time, showing the long slow process of reloading a musket. Movies like The Last of the Mohicans are generally exceptions to the rule.🐭

I didn't noticed any; they all seemed like one-shot flintlocks to me.

Tony is right. The weapons are mostly flintlocks... they are slightly innacurate in that they are later Napoleonic muskets but it isn't too noticable.

There are a few later, but there aren't any Winchesters or any innacurate pistols. If I recall there may be a Sharps Rifle (which is very innacurate) but I couldn't find it while watching it just a few moments ago.

"The game's afoot!"
