Lois Nettleton does a lot of palabering in Russian and she sounds to me (what do I know about the Russian language?) like she wasn't faking. Does anyone know if she and her comrades were actually speaking Russian? There's nothing in her IMDb biography that indicates it.

Da, they were really speaking Russian. I've always wondered whether Lois knew the language or learned some for the part. I kind of suspect the latter. Her accent is very good but you can still tell she's not a native speaker.

I haven't watched it for a few years so need a refresher on what she and her tovarishchi were talking about. All I remember is John Ericson walking over to her and, taking out a pack of good carcinogenic American cigarettes, offering her one by asking, "Papirosa?"

And Lois's carefully accented reply, "Vhere dit you learn dat vord?"

Thanks for that, HOB. It sounded like the McCoy, but, as I said, "what do I know about Russian?". There was nothing in her bio nor in the TRIVIA section of this page that even hinted at it. I did not think it was dubbed. Lois Nettleton was a lovely woman and quite a talented actress. Certainly a dedicated one.

I saw this movie the first time on TV many, many years ago and, even then, I do not believe I saw the whole movie. Only recently did I acquire a VHS copy. Quite an adventure yarn.

The other issue I brought up earlier about swipes for certain space scenes I will try to pinpoint and raise in another entry.

Thanks, again.

(perhaps you should consider making an entry in to the TRIVIA section)

What would be the trivia? That she's speaking real Russian? I really don't think that qualifies, do you?

Her dialogue definitely wasn't dubbed, even the Russian.

I remember being shocked when I read that when Harry Truman campaigned in Chicago in 1948, among the centerpieces in the parade was Miss Chicago -- Lois Nettleton! When I saw her in the 60s she looked so young I couldn't believe she was old enough to have been Miss Chicago in 1948. She did have that great half-naked (albeit from behind) shot in The Bamboo Saucer, her first shot in the film. Not bad for 40. Even when I saw her in that guest shot in Seinfeld in the late 90s she still looked years younger than the almost-70 she was.

Anyway, she was a very talented and underrated actress, but did well for herself. I'm still surprised it took her so many years to really catch on. Her film debut was an unbilled bit in A Face in the Crowd (1957), and even then she was I believe 29 -- not old, but not 20 either. She also did better when she became a blond in the 60s.

She was wonderful in the original The Twilight Zone episode, "The Midnight Sun".

Well, the only thing I would say perhaps in the TRIVIA page is that she was pulling a Boris and Natasha but actually speaking he language. It would be interesting, no matter how mundane the exchange, to have a English translation of what they were talking about. I mean, in the play it can be doped out but often much is lost in the translation.

(I suppose the Embrace in Space foreshadowed the 1975 Apollo–Soyuz Test Project)
