It seems a lot like Le Mepris, but I would surely like to see it.

Well it's apparently a film about the breakup of the Godard-Karina marriage while Le Mepris is an auto-biographical film about the tensions of that relationship.

reply

Yes, any ideas of where to find this on DVD? Apparently New Yorker Films used to have it, but not anymore.

reply

Only sporadic interest on this thread, it would seem, but sign me up for a copy, too. I'd love to own it.

reply

I've never seen it, but yeah I'd love to own it too.

Hey Thomas, long time!!!

It is more like "La maman et la putain" than "Le mepris" in my opinion, but there are similarities to both.

Hi, Kriege!

Haven't run into you for a while. I hope you're well.

Your post would suggest you've seen this film, you lucky fellow! I presume at a cinema (doubly lucky), but if not, could you let me know where you tracked down a copy, please?

Thomas,

I bought a copy at raredvds4sale.co.uk. I would be happy to make you a copy but unfortunately it is region 2, which I can play on my dvd burner, but not on my main player, which is only region 1. If I get a region 1 copy of something you want, I will copy it on my region-free burner and send it to you, but this time I can't. In any case, why don't you take a look at what Neil has to offer at raredvds4sale? His prices are very reasonable.

reply

Thank you so much for introducing me to this site, Kriege. It is, without a doubt, the most awesome treasure trove of stuff I've wanted to see or own a copy of. And the prices are not just "reasonable" - it's insanely cheap. It's like some sort of public service for super-rare-movie-hounds!

Neil suggests he has a fully-subbed, 2-disc version of L'AMOUR FOU coming out sometime in the future, so I'm going to wait for that. But, in the meantime, rare Rossellini, Resnais, Bresson, Visconti's LO STRANIERO (I've been desperate to see this, so even a poor-quality, dubbed version is fine), the list goes on and on. I'm going to give this fellow a good deal of my money!

Anyway, once again, a huge thank you.

Oh, and conveniently, I live in England, too - so Region 2 is no problem (Region anything is okay, come to that).

Thomas,

Glad to help you out. I caught "The Stranger" in Japan. Maybe you are trying to complete your viewing of Visconti, but I have to warn you that "The Stranger" is the dullest film he ever made. It plays like an English television adaptation of a work of literature and it lasts about as long as it takes to read the novel. Having all the French and Algerian characters speaking Italian doesn't exactly help either in maintaining interest and believability, but see the film and decide for yourself.

I contacted Neil lately and he says the English subs are done, but he only has to sync them. Hopefully it will be available next novembre when his shop re-opens after a short break. He promises that the quality is much better than the version floating in the torrent network.

reply

Neil is an absolute legend! He has by far the best 'grey market' stock that I know of and does some great bulk deals. Emphatically endorsed!

reply

He is done! I bought it recently and it's a fine copy. The image is better than the version in the torrent-network and more important ... completely subtitled!

I just found a copy of L'amour Fou on YouTube.com, but after watching 4 hours found out that the ending looks like it's missing !!! IMDb says that the film runs 4:12, but this YouTube copy is only 4:05. Also, at the very end of this YouTube copy, it looks like it switches to a commercial about some other French film. After watching 4 hours, I kind of get how the film ends anyway, but sure would've liked to have seen it.

If you still want to see the YouTube copy, then search
"Jacques Rivette - L'amour Fou".
