This is what the tape on The Ring SHOULD have looked like...

This is what the tape on The Ring SHOULD have looked like! When I watched The Ring I was disappointed because the videotape was so clean looking and not really scary. I thought if they made the tape more grainy and the woman more jumpcut it would have been a really scary flick. And I just watched The Alphabet and that's what I was thinking about exactly. I've had nightmares that looked just like this! Oh well what can I expect from a Hollywood movie?

Cousin Cheryl, I don't think the family REALLY knows you.

I agree with you.
I was almost on the floor laughing when I saw the tape from The Ring. I'm not sure why exactly, but spinning chairs etc don't exactly creep me out too much.

Tyler's words coming out of my mouth. And I used to be such a nice person.

Yeah, David Lynch actually wrote this based on a nightmare his niece(Peggy Lynch)had had. Its like a nightmare on film. Its really neat.

You mean his first wife, Peggy Reavey.

reply

No, his wife Peggy LYNCH. Watch the credits...it's in there.

Strangely enough the first time I saw "The Alphabet," it was a VHS copy of a VHS copy and it didn't have a label of any kind on it. And because it was a copy of a copy, it was especially crappy quality. A friend of mine made me a copy and I watched it in the dark by myself one night and it was seriously creepy and left me with a wierd feeling for a while.

The ring video pales in comparison.

I thought The Ring video was really scary.

I thought The Alphabet was really scary.

However, I think The Ring video was a bit scarier. It showed more random things and gave you less time to see each one, while The Alphabet focuses on a few things for a longer time. The longer you look at something, the more used to it you get, and that makes it less scary.

reply

But at the same time, the longer you look at something, the more you are given the illusion of it looking back at you.

Yes Janet, life's pretty cheap for that type.

Oooooooooooooh! It's like we're trying to spook each other out at a sleepover or something.

reply

How about they're BOTH terrifying? Although I'd have to say the tape from The Ring is much, much scarier. You must've watched a different film than me.

reply

I find both quite scary, and disturbing, but in slightly different ways.

I didn't think it was scary, neither was the tape in The Ring. It was just weird.

reply

the original ring (japanese version) has much better video than the usa remake

reply

The Ring video was okay, but I found The Alphabet to be quite disturbing, and awesome at the same time. And the thought also crossed my mind while watching The Alphabet. "THIS is what the Ring video should of been like..." Oh well. Both were awesome, but the Alphabet was truly awesome, and disturbing. Never thought I would be O_O by the ABC's... David Lynch is awesome.

ring video: silly
alphabet: weird
charlie/chocolate factory original version surreal sequence: weird
scary? hmmm... mystery man in lost highway?

reply

The mystery man in lost highway I would say was CREEPY.
Ring video: RETARDED.
Alphabet: SCARY AS *beep* HELL
Charlie: Quite disturbing, but nothing compared to the oompaloompa dance *shudder*

I really don't see how this is "SCARY AS HELL".
I wasn't in the least bit disturbing. It was too confusing to be scary.
I was just watching the whole thing thinking "What the hell is David Lynch trying to do with this movie?" and i still don't know what it was. Was it just to disturb or scare us?

reply

i thought it was SO disturbing. I watched it in a film class, and our teacher made us watch it several times through, and each time both the animated sequence with the anatomy drawings and the girl singing the alphabet made me feel so uncomfortable. im big on horror movies and i normally dont have a problem, but this to me will stay in my mind for a while. it was one of those things that was so disturbing that i didnt like it. i dont know what he was trying to do either, but it definitely creeped me out. ugh i get chills and feel a bit sick just thinking about it. just the sounds playing in the background that sounded like a baby crying backwards, or the strange buzzing coming from nowhere, or the girl's jerky (stop-motion) movements or the way her face was contorted. GOD it was scary.
