Rififi?

Why do people insist on comparing this film to Rififi? Rififi doesn't have the subplot about trying to seduce the spinster bank employee with the key to the safe, it doesn't have the subplot about the hate the mercenary (Kinski) feels for the playboy and there's nothing comparable to the vague, wordless romance with the girl on the distant yacht.

So what's so Rififi about this flick?

Well, it is a heist film, after all isn't it? Doesn't Goldfinger have an elaborate heist sequence? The caper film is a genre with conventions, just as westerns and horror films have conventions. Rififi was pretty much the first caper film ever made, countless others followed, some good, some OK, some lousy. This particular one was quite good indeed.
