With the most advanced human-created artificial intelligence running the ship, which in conversation is practically indistinguishable from a human and can think for itself independently and recognise people from human drawings, why in the blue fuck did Bowman rotate the pod so that HAL could see him and Poole and LIP-READ THEM!?!

I'll tell you, this was Bowman's folly, his PRIDE almost making him succumb.
