What was the eclipse for ?

I've never understood the meaning of the eclipse during the Dawn of Man. Was it just a coincidence to have happened on the same day as the monolith ? I would assume that's what it was - or are we to believe there was some advanced life form able to alter the path of the moon to eclipse the sun on the same day the monolith was discovered ?

Either way, what was the meaning of it ?
