I saw a 70mm screening of 2001 at the Egyptian Theater in Hollywood tonight, and people went absolutely wild when HAL arrived onscreen. They clapped during his first shot, laughed hysterically as he tried to persuade Dave not to disconnect him, and then fell totally silent during his surprisingly emotional rendition of “Daisy”. I hope that Douglas Rain knew what an impact he had on this classic, and may he rest in peace.
