What is the deal with Matthew and Destiny?

I'm kind of new to One Life To Live, so I'm just wondering why Matthew doesn't want to be a father to his son. What happened between him and Destiny? Did he give up rights to his son, if so why?

This storyline goes back to the end of OLTL. Matthew and Destiny weren't really a couple. While Destiny did have a crush/feelings on Matt, he thought of her more as a friend. Their one time together was more Destiny consoling Matthew, who had confessed to murdering Eddie Ford. Matt then ended up in a months-long coma and when he awoke, Destiny was pregnant and about to give birth. Matthew wasn't ready for father and didn't want any part of the baby. It appeared he bonded when Destiny gave birth, even naming the baby after his late brother, Drew, but now it seems his initial feelings have returned and he'd rather party at Shelter than take on the responsibility of being a father at a young age. What gets me is that his parents are paying child support. He just got a job. Destiny should take him to court and force him to pay child support, whether he wants a relationship with his son or not.

In terms of the finances, the Buchanans are billionaires, so I'm sure financially Destiny is better off with Bo and Nora paying the child support than whatever meager amount Matthew could offer.

But yeah, Matthew is really being a complete dick about the baby (even making snide jokes about it in the club) and not getting nearly enough heat for it. I appreciated Clint taking him to task today, but before now, everyone's been being way too lenient on him. NuOLTL Matthew is a total douchebag. Everyone he encounters should tell him so.

Matthew's current reaction is indeed a departure from the finale of OLTL, but not from how he thought about the baby up until the end. Perhaps the writers felt the leeway that since the finale just sort of wrapped things up neat and tidy, to have Matthew go back to his original reaction to the baby. But still, even if Matthew didn't want the baby, I don't get him being so snidely dismissive of it - "Been there, done that, had the baby"? That's your freaking son, douche.

And I'm iffy on Bo and Nora bailing him out. Ordinarily I'd be like "Matt made his bed, make him lie on it" but it's important to note that when Matthew was in the coma, Destiny was planning on aborting the baby. The only reason she didn't is that Nora begged her not to, even going as far as offering to pay for everything. At the time, she had been told Matthew was unlikely to ever wake up from his coma, and so she thought his son would be the only link she'd ever have to him. And so Destiny agreed to have the baby, and the pregnancy continued beyond when it's legally allowed to abort. And then Matthew woke up. So, it's complicated. And, in no uncertain terms, Drew likely wouldn't be here for Matthew to be responsible for if it hadn't been for Nora. And she did make Destiny a promise, regardless of the fact that it was made assuming there'd be no Matthew.

Matt's a douche in this version, though I am a firm believer that if a man doesn't want to be a father and a woman wants to keep the baby then it's on her. Not everyone, male or female, wants kids at any point in their life. It's not a crime.

Matt woke up from a coma and, tada, you're a dad. It was a weird, and honestly stupid storyline. I think the only reason they did it because show considered killing off Matt?

I dunno, Destiny knew Matt wasn't in love with her, she could have just aborted the baby. I'd say they could have used protection but I swear no one soaps ever does so whatever. Now she's mad he wants nothing to do with her still. Meh, the story bores me. They were boring before, they're boring now and making Matt ten times the douche he was before doesn't help matters.

Well, Matt was pretty douchey before on the original series. He killed Eddie Ford in cold blood, not self-defense, then let his arch-rival, Nate (Eddie's son) take the fall without saying a word. Matt never confessed his crime to the police and his parents (his father the police commissioner and his mother the D.A. cover up his crime).

Wasn't it like in defense of Nora? Didn't he see Eddie about to rape her or something and Nora blacked out? I thought I remember that.

i'm trying to think back to 3 years ago. Eddie had kidnapped Nora (Clint was behind it), somehow she got away & Bo found her in the woods. but she couldn't remember anything, i'm pretty sure he drugged her. idk about the whole rape thing, but knowing Eddie its possible.

Matthew was driving looking for Nora too & came across the hotel room or was it Nora's car. where he found Eddie & Nora's phone. he kept asking what he did to his mother. he then picked up the gun & shot Eddie once (?).

called Clint at B.E. & told him what he did. & Clint came over to help get rid of any traces of Matthew.

Matthew didn't see Eddie do anything to his mother, but he did find the room where Eddie was holding her. Eddie came back in the room and found Matthew and started taunting him saying he had sex with Nora and I think insituated he had hurt her. He kept on and on and would never confess that Nora had actually escaped. He pretended like Nora had enjoyed leaving Bo. Matthew snapped and shot Eddie. So I don't think it was really cold blood. He was provoked because he thought his Mom had been hurt by that psycho, not that it makes it right.

Ah, yup, I remember now. I remember thinking Eddie was such an idiot for not just telling the truth and instead leading Matthew to believe he'd raped and possibly killed his mother, when the dude had a gun on him.

I suspect there is something more that happened in the 6 months since the finale. We might found out what it was that made Matthew the way he is.
