Were Rama and Vimal popular on the old OLTL?

I'm new to OLTL, but I find them annoying. I thought they were new to OLTL, and I found it surprising that they were on the old show.

They were around for about a year and a 1/2 or so. I don't know how popular they were, but I think people like Rama more than Vimal.

Neither was particularly popular nor particularly important. Vimal showed up in November 2010 and Rama in January of 2011, so with the show ending in January 2012 it certainly wasn't very long. And even in that year they weren't very important. I think, when it was learned they were coming back to this OLTL a lot of people's reactions were "Really? Them?"

The only thing I can think of is that they're Indian which is pretty unusual for a soap. Maybe they're hoping for that demo? I have no idea. Personally, I've never minded Vimal because he's just generally been used as comic relief and as a corporate lackey for bigwigs like Clint and Victor, but Rama's annoyed me more because for some reason the show seems to see her as having leading lady potential that I just don't see. Honestly, both are pretty darn average looking if you ask me - Rama's body may be nice but her face really isn't, particularly her teeth.

That said, today was the first episode I've ever found myself okay with Rama's role - her being a David Vickers fangirl that he's using is the sort of role she should be having, not vying for a guy way too hot for her (Cutter) against a girl way too hot to be threatened by her (Natalie). It was equally ridiculous when they toyed with her and Cristian in the final year, although I feel like that was more a testament to how lost they seemed to be with what to do with Cristian in the final years of the show.

Rama kind of annoyed me on the old show as well, but Vimal always made me laugh.

Shenaz Treasury who plays Rama was pretty big in her native India. She was a Bollywood star and MTV VJ in Asia.

It took me a while to get into Rama and Vimal but they were OK

I liked them both, and it was good to see non traditional people on a US soap.

I agree. Soaps usually have a token black character or a token Hispanic character, but rarely do they have an Asian character and not one of Indian descent. I especially like Rama, I think Vimal is a pill and she should dump him.

I thought Rama was beautiful!

Not especially. The show, IMO, really tried to weave them in enough so that they could be viable characters...and I'm sure some viewers appreciated seeing atypical ethnic characters like them, if only for the sake of diversity. But overall, I found them tedious. Rama had potential, but they tried too hard to make her this understated force. And Vimal was just a sap, who alternated too much from wimpy pasty to being stubborn traditionalist.
