Julia Baker would be in trouble today...

...if she left Corey alone as often as she did on that show. There are several episodes where she has left him alone in the apartment and in the car. He was under 10 years old, and she apparently couldn't find a sitter. Even though he was instructed not to, he not only talked to strangers, he let them into the house!

I guess it speaks to the challenges of single parenthood...

That was the 60's. It was a different place and time. Even if a child did talk to strangers or let them into the house (I did all those things, too), a parent didn't have to worry about them being kidnapped or killed. Things like that just didn't happen much in the 60's.

Actually, they happened just as much then as they do now, which is to say not much. Stranger kidnappings and murders are very, very rare - the culprit is almost always a family member, friend or adult acquaintance such as coach, etc.

Difference between now and then is we didn't have 24 hour news back then, so these things didn't get much publicity. And "good taste" prevented people from discussing the heinous things family members did to children.

As for leaving kids alone - there was a Julia episode where earl j waggadorn, who way maybe 10, was left to babysit his infant brother. Horrendous. Even putting aside possible crimes, the chance for accidents was as high then as now. People were just uninformed about such dangers then.
