Why did they call earl j. waggedorn by his full name?

Why didn't they simply call him Earl

Only cory called him that. It was a nickname to cory to use his whole name. Kind of an endearment after a while.

The easiest thing i have ever had to do was give my heart.

I think it just added to the quirkiness of the character. We're obviously supposed to think of him as a mischievous imp.

Because the guy who wrote and directed this series was a total hack and this was his idea of a joke. Horrible sitcom.

It certainly has some clunky moments. Diahann Carroll's beauty and charm puts Julia over well. It certainly would not have worked without her. Here we have a widowed black woman in a professional field trying to raise her son as a single mother and deal with the loss of her husband who was tragically killed in Vietnam...OMG the situation practically drips with drama, political intrigue, and pathos. Yet we get a sweet as saccharine version of her life. I think Julia definitely missed the marked dramatically and relied a little too much on Ms. Carroll's charm at times.

Because it was a sitcom not a drama!
