The sickest episode

The sickest episode I ever saw on TV was Miss Belle w/George Maharis. How did the censors allow this episode on US Network let alone UK TV?

(SPOILERS)
George Maharis makes an acquaintance with a young girl who invites him to her house she lives with her Aunt Belle. Auntie hates men, and throughout the episode it becomes apparent, the little girl, is in fact, a young boy being forced to dress up as a little girl. In one scene, Aunt Belle ties a leash onto the boy in to make him feel like a dog. Oh Gross!
I was eight years old when the series was first run on ABC, and the episode scared me big time.

A perverse and disturbing story, even by today's standards. It was written by Charles Beaumont, the prolific American writer who penned many classic Twilight Zone episodes. "Miss Belle" is said to be partly based on personal experience -- Beaumont's mother allegedly dressed her son in girls' clothes!

Tragically, he died at the young age of 38, of a mysterious ailment that may have been early-onset Alzheimer's disease.

All the universe . . . or nothingness. Which shall it be, Passworthy? Which shall it be?

The woman got exactly what she deserved in the TV version too. He tried to get the knife away from her and ended up stabbing her. Maharis finds him under the table staring at the corpse muttering "Naughty... naughty... must be punished."

I'm all right, I'm alllll right!

I have the set of Volume 1-6, Collectors Edition, with all 17 television episodes. I ordered it online last year(can't remember exactly from where as I order lots of vids from various online outlets). It took me awhile to find it -- I didn't remember the title and found it by googling something like "whistling theme amusement park British horror" or something like that. I was so jazzed to find DVD's of it as I hadn't seen it since I was a kid, and I only remembered a few of the shows (Eve, Miss Belle, The Indian Spirit Guide). Those episodes really stuck with me. I absolutely LOVED this show and the fact that each episode had a famous American actor in it.

Here is a listing of all the episodes in my set:

Eve (Carol Lynley)
Jane Brown's Body (Stefanie Powers)
The Indian Spirit Guide (Julie Harris)
Miss Belle (George Maharis)
Paper Dolls (Michael Tolan)
The New People (Robert Reed) -- After viewing these now, this episode is definitely the creepiest to me. Sent shivers down mine spine after watching it.

One on an Island (Brandon de Wilde)
Matakitas is Coming (Vera Miles)
Somewhere in a Crowd (David Hedison)
The Beckoning Fair One (Robert Lansing)
Poor Butterfly (Chad Everett)
Stranger in the Family (Anthony Corlan)
The Madison Equation (Barbara Bel Geddes)
The Killing Bottle (Roddy McDowall)
Do Me a Favour and Kill Me (Joseph Cotten)
Girl of My Dreams (Zena Walker)
The Last Visitor (Patty Duke)

I am not listing these for sale as I want to definitely keep my set, but in case someone wanted their memory jogged about what the episodes were or who starred in them.

The DVD set I got was in great condition.

If someone has trouble getting the set and really wants one (like I did -- I know how that feels!), post to me and maybe we can find a way.

Or just post if you have any questions about any of the episodes: I watch these over and over.

:)

I'm watching it right now on YouTube, which might have all of the episodes! I've already watched "Matakitas Is Coming", which was even better than I recalled; and "Stranger in the Family". I remember being captivated by Anthony Corlan as Boy; actually, make that a crush, as I was about 17 then. I'm still an Anthony Corlan/Higgins fan.

I recall watching "Miss Belle" and was fascinated by this dark look into the human psyche. The revelation wasn't a surprise because I thought "she" was a he from the opening, with the tree-climbing, even before Roberta claimed to be a boy. Kim Burfield does a good job, but he really doesn't look "girly". By that age, I'd read about people dressing children opposite to their sex, including Ernest Hemingway's mother, who called him Ernestine and treated him as a daughter, not a son. So, it wasn't the shock to me that it would have been to those who were much younger.
