The kitchen

I noticed the beautiful stove and wondered if anybody knew anything about it. It's also interesting that although the house had electric lights, the kitchen still had an ice box. Where were they getting block ice in the late 1960s?

I always figured that icebox was more decorative, or somehow it was rewired... like the old lamps in the living room which had to be lit by kerosene originally.

How sad, that you were not born in my time, nor I, in yours.

I paid very close attention and once both Martha and Carolyn opened the ice box in succession and there was a big old block of ice.

I also researched stoves and the first gas stoves first started showing up in American kitchens in the very late 19th century, which seems late for the Captain to have one, even though he had a gas heater. It's possible he brought a gas kitchen stove from England, where they were being manufactured earlier than in the US.
