Aggie

Does anyone know why the character of Aggie was replaced/or left?

I can't tell if you are serious or not...

I'd like to know that myself. I really liked her character and then all of the sudden she was replaced by Juanita with no explanation at all.

and now even I want to know. My boyfriend and I watched two more episodes of season one on DVD last night. the first had Fran Ryan picking flowers in the opening credits, as usual, but in the next episode, "Juanita" was picking the flowers instead - with no explanation at all! I liked Aggie and miss her wry wisecracking already.

Philip Brown mentioned that he lived near Fran Ryan in the dvd and I was excited that he was going to mention what happened to Aggie but he did not. Juanita had a much smaller part than Aggie and was not allowed to develop a personality. It seems that Juanita appeared in more episodes than Aggie.

I'm watching this show for the first time and love it. So glad to know I'm not the only one who thought Fran Ryan was special and although it's ancient history I'd like to know why she was replaced. I've not enjoyed the episodes without her as much but will keep watching.

Fran Ryan (Aggie) was one of the great television character actresses of the 60's 70's and 80's - check out her imdb page, she was very active. I've always wondered why she was replaced too because clearly she was a wonderful actress. I wonder if possibly she quit because she had so many other offers or perhaps they wanted the housekeeper's part to be a smaller role (Fran was billed third on the show while Noami Stevens was billed sixth). I'm surprised the recent book on the Doris Day Show didn't address the situation at all. I like Naomi too but Fran was marvelous on the show she really minds me of some of the "country women" I knew growing up.

According Naomi's memior, Doris and Fran did not gat along. She (Naomi) was hired mid-season when "Doris just could not work with her (Fran) anymore." At any rate, Naomi herself was gone the following season.

It seems stange that they would get rid of the housekeeper in season 2. Doris commutes to the city after getting a job, it seems the family would need a housekeeper more then. I suppose since the producers had to add all the actors to play the magazine employees, they may have cut the housekeeper role to save money.

reply

I heard that too. For some reason Doris did not get on with Fran.

I came to this thread after watching one of the shows in the first season and saw a strange and possibly revealing mishap in the show about the boys wanting to go camping.

In the beginning of the episode, Doris is talking to the family at the kitchenette table while standing at the stove with Aggie walking by behind her. When Doris turns to get some milk from the refrigerator, she stumbles over something out of frame put behind her feet. Doris angrily ad-libs "Aggie!" and the tone in her voice makes it clear that it wasn't rehearsed and she was not happy. When Doris walks back to the counter after a cut, there is nothing on the floor behind her. The remaining scenes between Doris and Fran seemed strained to me, including a triumphant victory at the end when their mutually devised plan for the kids worked and they should have strolled back in the house arm in arm but Doris barely looked her in the eye.

I thought that perhaps I was reading way too much into a bizarre little on-set mishap but when the next episode appeared, Fran was gone! A little mystery for the ages.

What memoir? Naomi Stevens wrote a book? I couldn't find anything about such a book at Amazon. What is the name of it - or are you referring to an published interview (and if so, published where) with Naomi somewhere?

I can't imagine Doris and Fran not getting along but it's possible. They both seem so down to earth and unpretentious.

Just found this post. Naomi wrote her memior WORKPLACE HOLLYWOOD" 60 YEARS AS A CHARACTER ACTRESS for herself and her friends. She and Bob are dear, dear friends of mine. I spoke to Naomi last week as I had received a letter from Doris Day (a long story short--I sent some pics to Doris of her son Terry who was a friend of a friend years ago).

Naomi and I had a long chat. She said Doris just did not like Fran. She said Dodo referred to Fran as a Nazi. I told Naomi of the tragedies that poor Fran faced and she felt very bad. She said she had no idea. And she believed that Doris was not aware as she said Doris was a lovely, kind and compassionate person.

Thanks for the info. Did Naomi publish the book privately or just made manuscript copies for friends? I think I know a publisher who might be interested, he's published a number of books on show business personalities including several who are a lot less known than Naomi Stevens.

It is sad there was apparent friction between Doris Day and Fran Ryan as they both appear to be much loved ladies. The only good thing I guess we can say came out of it was a chance for Naomi to shine. I always liked both Fran and Naomi. Next time you talk to her let her know a lot of DDS fans still enjoy her work and miss seeing her in new projects and wish her the best!

reply

Hey. People don't always get along, no matter how nice they are. Even Doris can't like everyone she meets!

This may be old news by now, but Doris and Fran Ryan got along fine on the set. The reason Fran left the show was to replace Barbara Pepper as Doris Ziffel on Green Acres who was in declining health and had to leave that show. Mystery Solved!

According to an interview with Fran Ryan initially her and Doris got on well then things changed, she did not really blame Doris but rather she felt that someone in Doris's inner circle disliked her and had put the knife in, consequently I guess after the initial (quite standard) order of 13-14 episodes Fran's contract was terminated, this was apparently explained to her as wanting a more "ethnically diverse" cast. I tend to believe this version of events as over the years Doris has had more than her fair share of "hangers on" who work their way into Doris' inner circle of friends (often by befriending another inner circle member) they then seem to appoint themselves as Doris' "guardian angel" and try to cement their own position within the inner circle by "removing" anyone they see as a threat. Sadly Doris' trusting and open nature tend to leave her a bit vulnerable to these sort of people although they have always eventually been either found out for what they are or fallen foul of a similar person.
