best episode of Dad's Army

My fav would have to be That bullet is not for firing, It had its moments in there and by the end of the episode they still couldn't work out how to fire it.

But other episodes also crack me up as well especially the earlier ones from 68-71

There's one where Mainwaring dreams he is Napoleon, his lady friend is Josephine and Sgt Wilson is Wellington, I think.
Also loved the one with the German prisoner and his list: "Don't tell him, Pike!"

reply

Ahh I remember Pikes outburst lol and Mainwaring didn't help his cause when he uttered Don't tell him Pike lol.

Old Jonesy always crack me up he kept the laughs coming with his anecdotes of The Sudan amongst others!!!

The one where they get a boat and get lost at sea in the fog and when the hit land they think it is France.

reply

hehe yeah so they all started talking French Mainwaring said they were talking French because they were British

reply

Lol! I love that!

"Why are you speaking French?"

"Because we're British." lol

I don't know about a favourite, I like Two and Half Feathers, but there's so many I love.

reply

i like the king was in his counting house, mainwaring saying to his wife elizabeth "no of course they wont get drunk and smash the house up"!and specialy at the party, "dont stand on ceromany tuck in" and also after pike has shook the snowstorm, mainwaring-"that strange there's no snow" jones- "perhaps the womans come out"

reply

“At the party you may call me George”

No one else could impart as much sarcasm into the name “George” as John LeMez.

reply

Has to be The Two and a Half Feathers! Wonderful scenes of the cast in the 'Sudan', and being able to see Clive Dunn without all the makeup making him look old. Also it had a serious side, and far less far fetched than the other later series. Very sobering to see Jones being called a coward (much like Godfrey in 'Branded'), but being able to prove Prv. Clarke wrong, with the true story of bravery and courage. Love the scenes in the whole show's entirety where the cast play other people in different situations.

Trivia - the scenes where we see the dervishes rushing towards the cast was actually taken from the film The Four Feathers, in which John Laurie played a dervish warlord. or something like that.

my favorite is "The test".

For me it is "The Battle of the Giants".

It is a pain really; it is a christmas special and not likely to be released anytime soon. The BBC is dragging their heels enough over the release of series 7-9 as it is.

Grrrrrrr...!

"Mum's Army". Wonderful poignant acting among the comedy.

Isn't The Kilt the one with a cow costume recon disguise? I've never before or since laughed so hard at anything on-screen...

reply

Ten years later but I have to agree with you! (Vincent who voted for The Test).
Mr Yeatman the Verger was hilarious in this episode as the Umpire.

"And all the Ships at sea".

reply

Yes I thought The Test was the verger’s shining hour.

Verger: “I’m taking your name for that. Gross impertinence and sarcasm.”
Mainwaring: “You don’t book people in cricket.”
V: “I do.”

V: “24 runs Mr Blewett”
M: “You can’t award 24 runs. It was a lost ball.”
V: “you just threw it in.”
M: “we only just found it.”
V: “well it wasn’t lost then.”

reply

I'm with you totally on this one Mr Murphy. Branded from Series 3 is poignant, as you say, and thought provoking. It also includes a gem of a line at the very end of the show where with his, as ever, brilliant comic delivery John LeMesurier as Sgt Wilson bursts Mainwaring's pompous balloon most deftly.

my best episode is Never Too old.

if you watch it and read the meaning behind it then you will agree

reply

my favourits are The deadly attachment, all of the episodes from series 4 and menace from the deep.

reply

Series 4 is my favourite series! Each episode is consistently funny!!!

"Welease Woger!"

reply

"All is safely gathered in" is one of my favourites

reply

I must join with many others, and add my vote for "The Two and a Half Feathers", from series four.

Jonesy cracks me up with his re-telling of the desert war in the Sudan, and the "Old Farker" sequence is just side-splitting.

Also love Mainwaring as the pith-helmeted Sergeant.... "Keep ya +*>#@ heads down!"

HA HA.

"The Opener of the Way is Waiting"

reply

Just finished watching the box set of the series (not watched any of the Christmas specials yet). There are so many good ones but one that stands out for me is 'Keep Young and Beautiful'. When Manwaring dons the wig and Wilson just openly laughs at him had me cracking up.

Great series!

reply

So hard to choose but for me I think its Turkey Dinner

reply

Love that episode, it's in my Top 3. The bit with Wilson you mention is great, the way he laughs more and more uncontrollably. Also, Mum's Army - not normally that much of a romantic, but really feel for Mainwaring when he begs the lady (from 'Allo 'Allo!) to stay. Also, Two and a half Feathers is up there, though not sure how they got away with the 'old farka' bit!

Series 4 seems to be the most strongly regarded according to the comments.

"So this is the planet Houston"

reply

Rather bizarrely, and only 2 years and 8 months later, I nearly replied to myself in agreement! Think I'm turning into Corporal Jones and in a modern variation of an episode called "When Did You Last See Your Comments?"

reply

Yes, Keep Young & Beautiful is up there for me too. The wig scene is great, the way Wilson's laughter starts quietly and then a full belly laugh.

Mum's Army is my other favourite. I'm admittedly currently getting misty-eyed watching it on BBC2. I'm feeling a bit sorry for myself as it is from NYE celebrations. I think Mainwaring himself would tell me to man up!

*edit : just realised I've posted similar comments on this thread already. This is the third time - I must be hungover!

Put That Light Out , Menace From The Deep and The Deadly Attachment are my personal favourites.

reply

I've just watched 'Getting the bird', and I forgot just how funny this episode is. There is also a wonderful scene in it where Frazer says to Wilson that he will not tell the others about 'the other woman' being his daughter.

Very difficult to choose one. Might be Don't Fence Me In, the one with the Italian prisoners of war, I love that one. If the Cap Fits is another favourite, where Frazer atakes over running the platoon. round and Round went the great big wheel is another favourite. desperate Drive of lance Corporal Jones is another one I particularly like. but it is very hard to choose.
