officer Ed Wells needs a proper fitting hat

gary crosby must of had the smallest sized head in show business, his Adam-12 police uniform hat looked like a giant flying saucer on his head.
big head = movies
small head = TV

I thought he wore the hat too low over his brow. He practically had to tilt his head back in order to see Malloy. (Of course it doesn't help that he's not real tall.) :-p

He looked & sounded just like his dad Bing. Hopefully he wasn't as abusive as him.

Jack Webb was known for not unnecessarily spending money and probably didn't wish to spring for a specially-made hat.

I don't think it was an issue of there not being a hat that fit so much as it was the way Crosby chose to wear the hat: low, practically over his eyes. My bet is that the hat he wore fit him just fine, but he just liked wearing it differently.

I agree; every other actor/bit player/extra playing a cop had a hat that fit, more or less. I think this was an actor's (or director's) choice as a way of adding further character to Ed Wells, who was often a comic buffoon on the show. I don't believe he was wearing his hat for his best moment on the show, when he said he would recommend a medal of valor to his new partner who saved his life.
