The source material is way better.

This movie is loosely based on the short story The Southern Thruway by Julio Cortazar, go read it, it's free on pdf, and it's superior to this movie and it's sad that nobody acknowledges the short story. Why is it that some movies attempt and fail to do justice to their source material or even acknowledge the obvious influence?
