Two superstars together, not often!!

Duke and "The Dimple" together!! They were both excellent in this one, but I never saw Kirk Douglas overshadowed by anyone, except when he was with John Wayne. The only actor that's had the ability to make Kirk a second banana!!

A very entertaining movie, well acted and certainly a throwback to the very good Duke era movies.

You also had Duke with Jimmy Stewart in THE MAN WHO SHOOT LIBERY VALENCE, and in that one, I always felt Wayne was playing the second banana to Stewart!

John Wayne and Kirk Douglas were also IN HARM'S WAY in 1965, and it was Wayne who had wanted to work with Douglas for a long time, which surprised Kirk since in the past, they never really socialized and were complete opposites on the political spectrum. But they got along fine, and had good chemistry in both IN HARM’S WAY and THE WAR WAGON.

You know, you are right about James Stewart. The Man Who Shot Liberty Valance was definitely Jimmy's movie, one of the best he ever made. I wish they had worked together more. They played off each other wonderfully in this movie.

I also have In Harms Way. Kirk has a great role there, perfect for him. If anyone ever needed to be able to play angst in a movie, Kirk Douglas could do it with the best!! He plays the "anti-hero" to the hilt here and accentuates Waynes typically heroic style in his role. An outstanding movie!

It's interesting the difference Kirk had in the two roles. More comedic in War Wagon and tortured soul in In Harms Way. And outstanding in both of them!!

James Stewart and John Wayne were together in "The Shootist", the Dukes' last movie. Wayne was an old gunfighter dying from cancer and Stewart was the doctor treating him. A great film!

And if you noticed, when they meet, Wayne mentions it'd been 14 years since the Doc fixed him up after a gunfight at the Acme saloon, Strangely enough it was 14 years since they made LV together

You don't have to stand tall, but you do have to stand up!
