Greatest scare jump in film history

If you were in the theater in 1967 as a 13 year old that dive for her ankle made everybody in the theater scream as one, and scream loud. I've seen other films that scared people, Psycho, The Exorcist, Alien, The Shining, but I've never heard EVERYONE scream at once like they did at WUD.

My high school drama teacher showed this movie to us. He purposely sat in the middle of the room and screamed (well, yelled) at the moment Roat jumped. Scared the crap out of us.

I'd love to join your posse, boys, but first I wanna sing a little song.

Such a great story. I was trying to drink water when I read this just now and almost spit it out

LMBO at Disco Spider....great story!!!!

I expected the guy would catch her again but didn't expect a huge jump lol, but yeah that scene gave me a huge heart pounding moment. I suggest go watch Exorcist 3, there is a similar scene but 10 times scarier for me.

I jumped when I watched it an hour ago. I set my room and the entire upstairs up to make it that it was completely dark when all the lights went off in her apartment and completely light when they were on. When that happened I flinched, even at age 20 in 2011 it got me and no movies ever do that.

This was a CLASSIC scene! Just saw it the first time today, and yeah, I yelled. :)

The only thing I can think of like this is the hospital corridor scene in Exorcist III, which I saw in a huge, packed theater. You peeps know what I'm talking about, right? Heh. After the false jump, everyone in my huge theater screamed and laughed, and as they were still exhaling sighs of relief - THEN the real scare.

The sighs of relief and the next screams merged and the whole theater sounded like a Dyson about to explode.

Nick,
I watched this movie when it came out in 1967 and I still remember the chaos and screaming that erupted in the movie theatre when Alan Arkin leapt at Audbrey Hepburn's character. Even after a lifetime of watching movies, this stands out in my mind as drawing the loudest response of any movie. I vaguely recall people around me spilling their soft drinks and popcorn. And the females in the audience went berserk.

* SPOILER ALERT *

My brother tells the story of seeing "Wait Until Dark" as a teenager. He said that the audience also screamed when Richard Crenna stands in the doorway to say good-bye to Audrey Hepburn, suddenly gets knifed in the back by Alan Arkin.

After that, the tension was mounting for the remainder of the showdown, culminating with the famous leap. He said that girls were clinging to their boyfriends, and some were trying to exit the theatre - even to the point of trying to climb out of the balcony!

Wow.. people probably wouldn't even flench today! Although I did jump from my family room couch.

everyone at your theater was a pussy. statistically low chance of that, but there you go. you should be proud of being involved in such an anomaly.

The only other movie I saw in a theater where people screamed was Night of the Living Dead, in fact, I remember teen age girls running up the aisle out of theater at the height of the terror.

My gf likes to watch a lot of horror, not a great fan myself, and I never flinch even when she's losing it, but that dive really got me, really crapped my pants. The music helped of course but still, it's a shocker!

Biggest jump scenes for me would be "Friday the 13th" This movie, and "When a Stranger Calls".

I saw this when it first came out and remember that moment in the theater. A real screamer.

Tonight I watched it again just to show it to my 25 year old son. I turned the lights out when Roat entered at the end and prepared to watch my son's reaction, which I missed completely. I was too busy screaming and gasping and jumping out of my own chair.

I was sitting there waiting for it and it still got to me.

And my son loved the movie too. But he didn't have to go the bathroom after the credits.
