The remake was originally scheduled for release in 2007 or 2008 (there are even posters that show 2007) but was delayed until 2009 to coincide with the 200th anniversary of Gogol's birth. See http://www.rospofilm.com/news.html.

I hope it'll be good. I felt the story had potential but the script was not up for it. One of the movies you watch and feel it could've been better.

It was interesting to see a dark russian tale that had humor, a beautiful witch, a unique monster(Resembles a monster from a europian comic series), a protagonist who was more humble than holy, and had to rely on alcohol and chalk.
